Sometimes it takes a little help from our friends
In 2002 Christy Corum was an active sixth grader who loved to play outdoors, swim and have a BBQ in the back yard. But, that all ended with a life changing Jet Ski accident that left her in a halo with a broken neck and fighting for her life. She was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Scottish Rite on a ventilator where she began rehabilitation.
When she was strong enough to breath on her own and no longer required the halo, her parents, Kenneth and Debra made the difficult decision to return to Orange Park and continue Christy’s rehabilitation at home.
Since 2002 Christy has joined countless others working courageously at her physical therapy. She has been able to maintain her muscle and keep her body in top shape by working on an FES Bike, Functional Electrical Stimulator Bike
With the help of the Orange Park Eagles Lodge and friends and family, fund raisers were held in the hopes of raising enough money to purchase this amazing piece of adaptive equipment for Christy .
Christy had “friended” J.T. Townsend on Facebook and discovered his foundation. That is when Christy’s Mother Debra reached out to JTTF.
“We are looking for help on funding for an FES Bike for Christy. We hope to get her one at home so we can keep working her muscles and maximize her blood circulation and keep her in the best shape possible.” stated Debra Corum. (March 28, 2012)
The bike comes at significant cost and the funds were not readily available when Debra Corum applied with JTTF. But, a promise was made to look into what could be done.
Finally in May, 2012 the funds were available from JTTF to pay for the lower body FES Bike. June 28th, 2012 with the money collected by Eagles, family and friends, a bike was ordered. In four short weeks Christy will take delivery of her own FES Bike.Together we were able to purchase the full body bike.
Thanks to the love, support of family, friends and the community we are able to partner with the Eagles and help JT Give Back one more time!
